Trauma-Informed Care

Trauma-informed care is less a single therapy than a way of running the whole programme. It starts from the assumption that a significant number of people entering treatment have a trauma history, and that treatment itself can do harm if it ignores that.

In practice it changes pace and sequencing. Safety and stabilization come before any processing of difficult material, you are not pushed to disclose before you are ready, and clinicians watch for signs that a session is moving faster than is useful. Substance use is understood partly as an attempt to manage symptoms — hyper-vigilance, intrusive memories, sleeplessness — rather than as a failure of will.
